Family-run for more than 30 years, White Mark Farm sits where the Chilterns rise out of the Oxfordshire flatlands, with the Ridgeway National Trail running along the hedge line. Around 30 tents pitch on sheltered, gently sloping grass, joined by a handful of motorhomes and small campervans, and red kites patrol overhead all day. Watlington, which likes to call itself England's smallest town, is half a mile on foot for shops, takeaways and a couple of good pubs.
This is camping the old way, and priced like it: adults £13 a night, children £5, under-5s £3, with hot showers included. The block has seven loos, three refurbished showers, dishwashing sinks and a baby changing unit, and campers can use a fridge, freezer and microwave. Fire baskets hire for £2.50 a night with logs sold at reception alongside free-range eggs and camping gas. There are no electric hook-ups, the season runs late March to the end of October, and summer weekends book up, so plan ahead.
